James read Economics at the University of Birmingham and then studied Horn at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

James is currently Fourth Horn with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera. Prior to his appointment in 2005, James lived in Glasgow and performed regularly with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Scottish Opera.

In addition, between 1998 and 2005 James was Third Horn with the Orchestra of Scottish Ballet.
